Advanced Biblical Hebrew 3: Angels in the Bible, and Beyond

From the Hellenistic to early Rabbinic period (ca 300 BCE-500 CE), the character and roles of angels in early Judaism changed dramatically. Starting with passages from the Book of Enoch to Daniel and on to Mishnaic and early Christian texts, we’ll explore the many categories of angels that emerged, as well as their increasingly independent personalities as both guardians and punishers of humankind. Note: since most texts studied this semester are not in Hebrew, much of the material we’ll cover will be in English translation. This course will be available to registered students at no extra charge via Zoom online conference services. Students may attend live in the classroom, live online or anytime via recording.
