Advanced Biblical Hebrew 3: I Swear! Oaths and Curses in the Bible

In the modern world where talk is cheap, an oath or a curse caries little weight. In the ancient Near East, the potential power of words was taken very seriously, whether uttered by deities or mortals. In Biblical Israel, if a curse or an oath carried the voice or the authority of God, it was accepted as current or future fact. Our class will begin with an overview of oaths and curses in the Biblical world, then translate Biblical texts that exemplify this ancient and awesome tool of compliance to covenant or contract.
