From Egypt to Israel: The Shared Journey of Two Lands: The Lehrhaus Pre-Tour Course (Spring)
From Patriarchal beginnings to the 21st century, the tumultuous relationship between Egypt and Israel tells a far more complex story than the Biblical stereotype suggests. We see ourselves as Egypt's sworn enemy, forcing our way to freedom only through God's violent intervention. In fact, the two lands have acted in concert as much as in conflict. Our class will explore the friction and the friendship shared by these two lands over the millennia, with vivid digital video presentations that bring the past and present to life. And we'll explore some surprises; an example: why is Egypt today quietly rebuilding synagogues in its own country even though no Jews are left to pray there?
This is the recommended pre-tour course for the Lehrhaus Judaica and JCC/SF tour of Egypt and Israel, scheduled for December, 2010. Whether or not you join us for the tour, this is a class you won't want to miss.
