Midrash: Reading in Between the Lines of Torah
Midrash describes a wildly creative way of interpreting sacred text that is unique to Judaism. Midrash fills in the "gaps" in the Biblical text, re-imagines its stories, and elaborates the psychology of its characters. In this course, we will look at some intriguing Torah stories and examine the midrashim of the early rabbis on these texts. We will study these ancient texts in English, with brief reference to Hebrew terms. Our study will also include some later midrashim from contemporary poets, artists and thinkers. Please join us as we explore how midrash enlivens the Biblical text and speaks to our search of meaning today.
