Courses by instructor: Jessica Nutik Zitter
Jessica Nutik Zitter is an expert on the medical experience of death and dying in America. Born to a family of doctors, she went on to join the family business, training at Harvard and UC San Francisco to become a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician. However, she soon became troubled by what she saw as a medical system geared towards treating individual organ systems rather than whole patients and over-medicalizing the experience of death and dying.
This realization prompted her to obtain her boards in Palliative Care medicine, a new subspecialty that focuses on helping patients determine what type of treatment they prefer, as well as providing high-level symptom management. She now practices both Critical Care and Palliative Care at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
Dr. Zitter writes frequently in the New York Times and Huffington Post about these issues. She is the subject of an upcoming documentary. Penguin-Random House will publish her memoir in late 2016.
